Why I Love Shopping Vintage Gold Jewelry
As someone who has spent years sourcing and collecting jewelry, people often ask why I'm so drawn to vintage gold pieces.
The truth is that I love all beautiful jewelry. There are so many talented contemporary designers creating incredible work today, many of whom prioritize ethical sourcing, recycled gold, and responsible craftsmanship.
But there is something about vintage gold that continues to capture my heart. Here are a few reasons why.
Every Piece Has a Story
One of my favorite things about vintage jewelry is the sense of history it carries. Whether it's an antique watch chain, a Victorian locket, or an Art Deco filigree ring... each piece represents a moment in time, a reflection of the era it came from, the craftsmanship of the people who made it, and the world it existed in.
When I source a vintage piece, I think about what it took to create it and how remarkable it is that it has survived. Wearing vintage feels like preserving a small piece of history and can be extremely sentimental.
Preserving Beautiful Craftsmanship
Many vintage pieces were created during a time when jewelry was made to be worn and passed down through generations. The hand-fabricated details, unique clasps, old mine cut diamonds, rich gold tones, and intricate craftsmanship found in older jewelry can be incredibly difficult and expensive to reproduce today.
Giving Old Gold a Second Life
Every year, countless antique and vintage pieces are melted down for their gold value. While the gold itself survives, the craftsmanship, character, and history of those pieces are lost forever.
By collecting and wearing vintage jewelry, we have the opportunity to give these treasures a new chapter and to keep their story alive rather than allowing it to end.
A Sustainable Way to Collect
Choosing an existing piece means extending its life and celebrating something already beautifully made. It's a thoughtful way to consume less while honoring craftsmanship and quality.
Of course, sustainability exists across many areas of the jewelry industry today, but old gold is a unique way to sustainably shop fine jewelry.
Solid Gold Holds Its Value
Vintage gold combines beauty with lasting value. Unlike plated,gold-filled or mass produced jewelry, solid gold possesses intrinsic value. While jewelry can always be purchased because you love it, I appreciate knowing that the material itself continues to hold some value.
Many vintage pieces also carry a level of rarity and craftsmanship that becomes increasingly difficult to find over time.
A Final Note
This isn't an argument against buying new jewelry. Some of my favorite contemporary jewelers are creating exceptional pieces using recycled gold, responsibly sourced gemstones, and thoughtful craftsmanship.
For me, vintage and contemporary can coexist beautifully within the same collection. This is simply a celebration of the qualities that make vintage gold so special with its history, character, sustainability, craftsmanship, and the beauty of pieces that were made to last.
